“Mama?”
“Yes Snuggles?”
“Do you love me?” asked my little rabbit.
I was taken aback by his question. “Of course I do.” After a pause, I asked, “Why do you ask?”
“I overheard you talking. You said you didn’t deserve to be loved because you weren’t doing enough,” replied the little rabbit. His nose quivered and his ears dropped a bit before he continued, “I don’t do nothing. Doesn’t that mean I don’t deserve love?”
I placed Snuggles in my lap and looked at him. “No darling, I love you no matter what. I love you just because you are a part of my life.”
“Oh good,” my little rabbit smiled. Just as he was named, he snuggled into me. “I love you too mama. No matter what.”

As the cliché goes, sometimes we are our own worst critics. A lot of people love non-human animals because they seem to give the unconditional love we humans need.

But what gets overlooked is that these same non-human animals often get unconditional love from us humans, ourselves.

Perhaps they give us unconditional love because that’s what we give to them. Perhaps we’d feel unconditionally loved if we’d only just unconditionally love ourselves.
